This looks starts with even, clean edges. Starting with totally dry hands, clip your nails short, leaving a small strip of free edge (no longer than the end of your finger). We like to leave a straight edge (you'll round the corners in the next step). Upgrade to a self-collecting clipper to avoid leaving fingernail clippings all over the place.
Next, round off the corners and file any rough edges with a good nail file. As a rule of thumb, try to mirror the shape at the base of your nail. Many professionals prefer glass files (this set comes with a bonus mini for on-the-go), but you can't go wrong with a classic pack of emery boards. We love this crystal set for a super luxe experience.
The next step is all about cleaning up your nails. Remove any old polish (or soak off a dip or acrylic set) with a non-acetone remover and soak your nails in warm, soapy water for a few minutes (bonus points for a cute nail dish like this one). Make it a 1:3 mix of 3% hydrogen peroxide (i.e., one part hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts water) if your nails have taken on a yellowish tone.
Then use a nail brush to gently clean the undersides of the nails. While hands are wet, use a gentle scrub to exfoliate any rough spots away (this one doubles as a scalp and body scrub and smells amazing).
This step is all about cuticle prep. Use a classic orangewood stick to push back the cuticles from the surface of your nails. Then, use a cuticle nipper (this one comes with a cuticle pusher) to clean up any hangnails or rough edges. We like to keep a spare cuticle nipper and nail file in our purse or car to fix any hangnails or breaks that happen on the go - fixing them immediately prevents picking at them and making them much worse! This all-in-one set makes a perfect gift.
Next, buff your nails. We like a multi-surface buffer like this one - be sure to use every side, and don't skimp on the "smoothing" step to even out any ridges. If your hands tend to cramp on this step, try an easier-to-hold buffer like this one.
For a clean, polish-free look, rub in a few drops of cold-pressed jojoba oil (this one comes with a dropper for precision, or if you're like us and use jojoba for hot oil treatments and double cleansing, try buying in bulk). If you're trying to grow stronger nails, this nail nourisher is also nice.
If you prefer polish, wipe the nail surface with a non-acetone polish remover and apply a clear or barely-pink shade. This pink top coat is great for neutralizing yellow tones. These skin-tone shades are buildable and help blur any imperfections. And for extremely weak nails, use a strengthening base/top coat combo. Finish off with quick drying drops to get on with your day.
Finish this manicure with a rich hand cream.
